Ingredients

  • For Aribas:
  • 300g pre-cooked white cornmeal
  • 300 ml of water
  • 50 gm butter
  • pinch of salt
  • To decorate the arepas:
  • breakfast :
  • 1 mozzarella cheese
  • lunch :
  • 1 avocado
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 chicken fillets
  • having dinner :
  • 300 gm minced beef
  • 1 red onion
  • red beans
  • 1 red pepper
  • Spices (paprika, cumin, curry)
  • hot sauce

To start this Colombian and Venezuelan arepas recipe, mix the cornmeal and salt in a large mixing bowl.

Make the arepas dough by pouring a little water into the bowl. Pour the water little by little and take breaks while kneading by hand. Continue this process until the water runs out.

Add soft butter to the bowl. Knead again with your hands.

For breakfast, the arepa queso recipe: Cut the cheese into small cubes. Add part of the dough, and reserve another part for decoration. Knead the dough for fifteen minutes by hand. You can also add a few pieces of smoked bacon.

To prepare the Avocado and Chicken Breakfast arepa recipe: Cut the chicken into small pieces. Marinate the chicken with the spices. Fry it in a hot skillet with olive oil. You can sprinkle a little fresh cream. Cut the avocado and mash it. Peel and chop the red onion. Cut the tomatoes into cubes. Mix avocado, onion and tomato in a bowl.

For the Beef and Vegetable arepa for dinner: Cook ground beef and seasonings in a hot skillet with olive oil. Peel and chop the red onion. Cut the vegetables into cubes. Cook red beans. Prepare the hot sauce in a bowl.

For all recipes, arepas form. Roll out the dough on a clean work surface. Cut it into 4 equal pieces. Roll out the patties by about 5mm (or more if you like larger portions). Your arepas are formed.

In regards to cooking the arepa, heat a frying pan with a handle of butter or olive oil. Put the arepas in the pan and simmer for ten minutes. Feel free to stir the arepas regularly until they are brown.

Once the arepas are cooked, move on to the decorating step. Depending on the recipe you’ve chosen, take your ingredients by your side.

Cut the pellet in half lengthwise to “unlock” it. Decorate with the chosen ingredients. Arepas must be delicious!

To finish the recipe, place the arepas back on the pan to finish the melted cooking of the ingredients. Enjoy the heat!
