This Sunday, October 23, 2022, she explains how to make Onigiri Japanese style for Halloween.

Discover onigiri, a very popular rice-cooked snack in Japan. It’s easy to make for kids who love to have fun in the kitchen, especially when it comes to making their Halloween menu. They will be able to form all kinds of balls or triangles and unleash their imagination.

You will need 8-10 pieces: 450 grams of sushi rice, 600 grams of water, 2 sheets of nori seaweed, salt.

Sushi rice is soft and sticky in nature, but it must be cooked in a special way. Weigh the rice and rinse twice with cold water. Put it in a pot and fill it with water. Cover and let it moisturize for 30 minutes. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat for 12 minutes. Make sure to continue cooking on low heat without lifting the lid. Remove from heat, then let the rice, covered, and rest for another 10 minutes.

The water will be completely absorbed and you will not need to add any water during cooking. We take out the rice in a bowl and let it cool.

To form the onigiri, start by moistening and putting salt on the palms of your hands, then form a ball in the shape of a triangle. And so on until the rice runs out. Then decorate the onigiri with fun Halloween-style nori moss designs.

Hanna’s good advice

To diversify the fun, you can prepare different types of onigiri by seasoning the rice with “furikaki” (a mixture of dried seaweed) or sesame… or even adding a nice colorful touch by adding turmeric or paprika.
