James Martin thought the UK deserved a lot of butter – and called for a margarine ban.

The TV chef says he hates it so much that he wants to take it off supermarket shelves forever.

James admits he loves butter but says it’s not just the competition that makes him stick his nose up when stuffing the fridge.

The 49-year-old, who loves the diary producer so much that he wrote a book about it, spoke to Express.co.uk about his dislike for the ingredient so many use in place of butter.

He blames Britain’s shortage of chefs compared to Italy, France and Spain, and says they will never tolerate margarine in their food.

“Margarine should be banned,” he said angrily. “It’s prepared food, it’s canned food, hidden salt, hidden fat.”

“It’s horrible, horrible stuff – it’s two items apart from plastic, it’s horrible stuff.

“I am a farmer’s kid. We always had whole milk, butter and cream. That’s what we had. There was no such thing as semi-skimmed milk in our house.”

This is the problem in this country. It’s not the butter in the butter pan or the butter you put on toast. It is a fact that not many people cook in the UK as they do in France, Italy or Spain.”

James returned to social media last year after deciding in 2020 that the abuse wasn’t worth it.

It became a target of harsh online messaging after technical difficulties hampered a longtime online chef who hosted it during the lockdown.

It was too much for him but now he’s logging back in again after spending some time.

James wrote before his resignation: “After seeing some comments posted online regarding my chef last night and anger towards me given the technical issues the production team had.

“I would like to apologize once again for this and will hunt down Live Nation, the production company, the IT team, and all the people I have hired to find out the problem.

“Having said that, this is a small relief to some of you online who are rightly pissed off at me. I promise I will talk to them tomorrow, I haven’t been into the IT side of things and know little about it but all issues will be brought up and sorted out as soon as possible.”

The star added: “It’s unfortunate that they didn’t use my team that makes the Saturday Show to do so but, as you can imagine, it was all out of my hands.

“To the rest of you who had a good night, thank you but due to the massive amount of vile comments posted directly towards me, this will be my last post as I will be taking a break from posting in person and all social media for the foreseeable future.”
