Cook chicken in cough syrup. The idea seems silly, yet it is attracting more and more young people on TikTok. A very dangerous practice, according to the US authorities, which issue a warning.

On TikTok, culinary “challenges” abound. Pasta with feta cheese, tortillas folded in four … but also more amazing recipes like those based on chicken and cough syrup (NyQuil), an over-the-counter medicine that treats cold and flu symptoms.

Boiling the drug can make it more concentrated

Prescription principle? Poultry poaching in NyQuil syrup or another cough and cold medicine can cause various side effects, including drowsiness. Hence the funny nickname for the recipe, “sleeping hen”.

Popular cough syrups contain paracetamol, dextromethorphan and doxylamine (a combination often found in these juices). At higher doses, dextromethorphan can be converted from its use for psychotropic purposes at higher doses. Doxylamine is an antihistamine for allergies, insomnia, and nausea, which may enhance drowsiness.

A challenge though not trivial because it would put the lives of youngsters at risk, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In fact, heating – or boiling – a medicine in a pan can make it more concentrated and modify its properties.

“Even if you don’t eat chicken, inhaling drug fumes during cooking can also cause the drug to enter your body at high levels.”alerted the Food and Drug Administration in an advisory report.

Another challenge on TikTok is causing hallucinations and hospitalization

The body also highlights other serious challenges on TikTok; Such as those where young adults are seen consuming over-the-counter allergy medication diphenhydramine (commonly known by the brand name Benadryl) for a lullaby.

A challenge not to follow because many young people have ended up in the hospital and/or died after taking high doses of the drug.

In this context, the Food and Drug Administration states that it is important to keep its medications out of the reach of young children.

Preventive work should also be done with children and adolescents about the severity of “unprecedented” trends and challenges on social networks.
