good morning. My family wasn’t enough, I suppose, so I recently started feeding the birds too: all sorts of seeds for all kinds of birds, with different devices, on intricate hooks designed to frustrate squirrels and panda waste. I had the pleasure of meeting my annoying new clients, visible to me from the kitchen while I was cooking: a sly and elegant blue jay and a nibbling blackbird, a red-capped woodpecker, a chubby little sparrow, the occasional cardinal with her calls from EncourageAnd EncourageAnd Encourage. Which means Sunday dinner is a lot more complicated these days. There’s a nutrient filling to start, then get ready for a family meal, which if you’re lucky we can eat early with a soundtrack of birdsong. This week’s offerings include sunflower seeds for crowding birds, and plenty of pomegranate for humans, in the form of Naz Deravian recipes for the winter solstice Lesh Yalda: a pomegranate-and-chicken stew called khoresh murgh nardoni (above) and kale sirabah salad, an uncooked pomegranate and walnut vinaigrette turned into a marinade for vegetables and fruits. A bowl of farro and broccoli with lemon tahini on Monday night? Possibly, although I like the taste of Indian chickpea butter.

On a Tuesday night, I love this midnight pasta with roasted garlic, olive oil, and chili, quick, elegant, and delicious, at least once the garlic is roasted. (Roast a few heads instead of the ones the recipe calls for. Leftovers in an airtight container up to two weeks in the fridge and is great for salad dressings, pizza, and all kinds of pasta.)

Wednesday Night Chef’s Choice: You can either make this delicious mushroom parmigiana or the free-range Parmigiana-style roast chicken, which is hardly ever a recipe.

For Thursday, how about wine-braised chicken with artichoke hearts? Canned artichoke hearts are a weeknight cooking secret weapon!

And then on Friday, you can top off the week with delicious Dijon and cognac broth or, if you’re pressed for time, with spicy slow-roasted salmon with cucumber and feta.
